At the Jadrná věda stage of the Slunovrat Festival 2025 in Opava, Professor Jiří Drábek and Dr. Josef Srovnal will showcase how modern genetics is transforming both oncology and criminal investigations. Don’t miss their talk Friday, June 20, 2025, at 5:00 PM. Seat reservations are available in the Slunovrat mobile app.
Genetics today plays a crucial role not only in medicine but also in forensic science. It helps doctors treat patients, supports courts in delivering justice, and gives answers to victims, the wrongly accused, or even single mothers. All of this relies on one thing: extracting as much information as possible from DNA — whether from a patient's tissue sample or a trace left at a crime scene.
Professor Drábek leads the Oncogenetics and Forensic Genetics research group. His team focuses on detecting somatic mutations in cancer tissue and developing new genetic tools for forensic scientists. Whether tracking cancer or criminals, his work is about uncovering hidden clues in our DNA.
Dr. Josef Srovnal, head of the Genomics and Circulating Biomarkers group at IMTM, focuses on liquid biopsies — a promising method that allows doctors to analyze tumors from a simple blood sample. Unlike traditional biopsies, this approach is much less invasive and can offer insights into tumor behavior, genetic mutations, and cancer progression. Dr. Srovnal also specializes in genetic diagnostics of hereditary cancer syndromes and rare genetic disorders.
