Monitoring of bacteriophage therapy using nuclear medicine imaging

Project acronym: Bacteriophage therapy
Project title: Monitoring of bacteriophage therapy using nuclear medicine imaging
Project registration number: FW08010029
State funding provider: Technology Agency of the Czech Republic
Programme: TREND 8
Start date: 2023-07-01
End date: 2025-12-31
Principal investigator: Nový Zbyněk Ph.D.

The project's main goal is to develop a universal method for labelling and displaying bacteriophages in vivo to monitor their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics during application in preclinical and possibly clinical studies. This methodology could then be used in general in every study. At the same time, a method will be developed for in vivo imaging of bacterial deposits, where the location and degree of bacterial infection will be visualized using specific radiopharmaceuticals. After applying bacteriophages, the dynamics of the loss of bacteria will be observable in real time based on the decrease in the intensity of the displayed signal. Collecting and storing such data is technically demanding and thus 5G networks are the ideal tool.
