Neuroscience and Aging

Laboratory of Experimental Medicine
Senior research group

Aim of our research group is to advance our understanding of aging and age-related disorders with major emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease. To achieve this goal we combine basic and translational neuroscience approaches.

Among the basic neuroscience questions, we focus on deciphering the role of impairments in axonal transport and of the axonal defects in aging and neurodegeneration. Moreover, we are also interested in elucidating the role of astrocytes in these processes with particular attention to the Amyloid precursor protein biology and pathology.

Among the translational neuroscience questions, we investigate cognitive, transcriptomic and proteomic changes of aging at the intersection with early clinical cognitive phenotypes. In addition, we explore the processes involved in cognitive testing and their potential impact on measurement results, as well as develop new methods for testing individual domains of cognition.

  • Identification of the earliest changes of aging and neurodegeneration
  • Understanding mechanism underlying aging and neurodegeneration: system approaches
  • Mechanistic insight into axonal transport pathology linked to Alzheimer disese
  • Biology and pathology of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP)
  • Cognitive changes occurring early in adulthood (from age 40 and before)
  • Multi-approach meta-analysis of circulating miRNAs in AD
  • Advanced human stem cell models of Alzheimer's disease
  • TDP-43 interaction with cargo or motor proteins involved in axonal transport
  • Validation of an inducible astrocyte-specific APP(770) overexpression mouse model
  • Morphological changes of astrocytes in Alzheimer's disease
  • Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) as a candidate molecular inducer and regulator of reactive astrogliosis
